Peter
Rooke pieces together a fascinating look at the long-vanished
Palace of Theobalds, built by William Cecil (Lord Burghley) and
later the home of King James I. Comparisons are drawn between
Theobalds and Hatfield House, built by Robert Cecil. The New River,
running through the Theobalds estate, was partly financed by King
James. In the 1760's a new house, on a new site, and known as
Theobalds Park, was built. In Victorian times this was owned by
the brewing family of Meux, who extended it considerably. It was
they who re-erected Temple Bar as their splendid "front gate".Running
time approximately 35 mins. Price £10.00
