Along
the eastern side of the High Street there are several buildings
of architectural merit including Hogges
Hall which retains a few 15th century beams and at the
southern end of the High Street is the Golden
Lion which is a 16th Century coaching inn. Nearby is Rawdon
House which was built in 1622 by Sir Marmaduke Rawdon for
his family. In 1880 the building was restored and a north west
wing added. The house was occupied by nuns as St.Monica's Priory
from 1898 to 1969. In the latter 1970's the house was extensively
renovated and is now used as offices. Also converted to office
use is The Grange, an 18th century
building on the corner of the High Street and Cock Lane.
Modern buildings
here include the health centre and police station whilst the nearby
'Lowewood' house has been successfully
turned into the Borough Museum and Arts Centre.
