Temple Bar was originally built in 1670, and stood in London at the junction of Fleet Street and the Strand until 1878.. It was the third gateway to have been built on the site, and was built by Joshua Marshall and Thomas Knight, master masons to the City of London. The Bar consists of three arches, the main arch spanning the roadway with pedestrian arches each side. Above the main arch there is a room with central windows. On either side of the windows were statues: on the north side were Charles II and Queen Anne, consort of James I and formerly a princess of Denmark. On the south side were James I and Charles I. The statues are the work of John Bushnell and were removed for safe keeping.
